"What if Apple designed your next drum kit?" (*) by digitalDrummer mag
There is this article by Allan Leibowitz (*) (who runs “digitalDrummer” magazine).
That's an interesting thought experiment, but aside from the fact that it will never happen, the price Apple would charge for an e-drum kit like that would be astronomical. So that would be completely utopian (and South Park could make a new Apple episode: The HumanCentiDrumPad).
Especially when you consider that you can build (or have built) a powerful system yourself—one that really takes you very far and is a lot of fun (and covers many essential aspects)—for a fraction of that utopian price, simply using existing e-drum hardware and existing computers. None of this is rocket science, and it’s already within reach for virtually every electronic drummer. I can only encourage everyone: go for powerful software drumming and get as close as possible to the utopia described in the article. Because that’s all you have left (forget the utopia).
I wonder why a utopia is being discussed here, but there’s no mention of how to get as close as possible to that utopia using equipment available today—or what key factors are involved.
Most e-drummers who dream of this utopia still have no idea what matters when it comes to the equipment available today (and tomorrow!).
I’ll list them here, broken down to the essentials:
1. High-quality VSTs (drum samplers) as a drum sound source
2. Minimal latency by choosing the right audio interface
3. stepless CENTER-to-EDGE Positional Sensing on the snare pad
4. Left/Right Hand Distinction on the snare pad and on the hihat pad
5. no center hotspots on mesh head pads
6. The best possible sound transducers: the right headphones, connected to the right headphone amplifier.
And just like that, everything is ready for E-Drum Heaven. 😊
