The benefit of the (large) screen when playing e-drums ❗️ ... (and when practicing: the screen is my music stand) 👉
To those who advocate or demand powerful, exclusive 'all-in-one-box' drum systems (be it e-drum sound modules or the cell phone/tablet as a standalone on which drum instruments/drum samplers run) without at least (I say minimum size) a 24-inch screen and precision control such as a mouse I always say:
your system is not desirable at all! (*)
And that's because
(1.) you can't set up powerful systems in a pleasant and comfortable way without the appropriate control tools ➜ detailed e-hihat settings and e-hihat tweaks are the first good example: a module should have the same or at least very similar features as Superior Drummer 3 in terms of hihat!
And because of (2.) detailed “custom velocity curves” (which can absolutely be the deciding factor between good (and possibly authentic) and bad velocity translation) as a second good example (there are many more, btw).
(3.) with a convenient and pleasantly controllable “DAW” you are immediately at the best professional level in terms of performance and comfort:
∙ the “track arranger/sequencer” allows you to comfortably play/practice to bar-quantized loops,
∙ drum editor/note tracks are the playback-capable sheet music replacement (so my screen is basically my music stand),
∙ practicing/playing to synchronized audio (i.e. drumless track), drum MIDI tracks and drum video tracks (i.e. drum cover/playalong-vid); the whole thing can also be “time-stretched” ( = made slower - and can then still be on the “grid” with the lowered tempo).
(4.) you have the whole range of drum sound production/drum sound editing options directly at your fingertips (e.g. your favorite DSP audio effects) and can apply them on the fly.
(5.) you can conveniently record and edit your playing (drum midi recording and editing) (recording may also include synchronized video takes for drum videos).
(6.) you can realize your quiet living room band with comfortable DAW work.
(*) With the exception that you can of course use functioning, pre-configured setups on compact standalone systems specifically for live onstage drumming (provided they are capable of delivering what you need and want) - but the following also applies to LIVE in general: a current Macbook, for example, can be used live as the main drum sound generator without any problems, even without special audio tweaking, and can even be operated without a power supply. With problem-free audio software (e.g. DAW and virtual drum instrument), which should not be difficult to use, the myth of 'computer crashes during the gig' is long outdated
--------
Here is a highly functional, simple and inexpensive system (composed of a cymbal stand + multi clamp + swiveling screen holder), which makes it possible to hang the screen really high if necessary (e.g. above the cymbal pads; maximum height: lower edge of the screen at a whopping 1.50 meters / 59 inches) and pull it close to you. This shows that this convenience can work anywhere, as the device can be positioned in front of the bass drum and allows a central view. ➜ The ultimate for practicing drums and setting up software ❗️
Incidentally, all the laptop + audio interface stuff can be attached to the lower section of the screen stand using another multi clamp + module holder plate!
And to the right of me is a small platform (a cheap drum throne with a glued-on wooden board) for the wireless mouse (at least as a shelf; the mouse also works wonderfully on the mesh head of the floor tom) and for the headphone amplifier: so I always have my main volume control as hardware right next to me. I place my wireless keyboard upright nearby and have it ready to hand when needed.
